2018 All-Bay Area News Group offensive team

FIRST TEAM

Offensive line: Mose Vavao, 6-3, 310, junior

Only a junior, Vavao still has room to grow, which is a scary thought given his size. A first-team all-WCAL selection, he helped lead the Lancers to a league championship and regional playoff berth.

CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Joshua Pakola, 6-4, 240, senior

The Stanford-bound outside linebacker — MVP of the WCAL at the position — required constant double teams as a disruptive force on the passing game, finishing the season with 10 sacks. The Lancers didn’t allow any team in league to score more than a touchdown as they claimed an outright WCAL title for the first time in 15 years. A bid for back-to-back state titles ended after a last-minute 14-13 loss in Loomis to Del Oro in the NorCal Division 2-AA championship game. Full story here.

Pakola also was named to the 2018 ALL-USA TODAY California Football Second Team Linebacker

FIRST TEAM

Defensive line: Afa Sanft, 6-0, 300, junior

A behemoth inside the trenches, the most valuable defensive lineman in the West Catholic Athletic League helped the Lancers allow just 23 points in league play en route to an outright title. He recorded 4.5 sacks for a team that fell one win short of playing for back-to-back state titles.

Utility: Evan Williams, 6-0, 190, senior

The WCAL player of the year caught 14 touchdowns and played a key role on a shutdown secondary as the Lancers claimed their first outright league title since 2003. Still in the recruiting process, Williams has 11 offers so far.

SECOND TEAM

Linebacker: Opeti Fangupo, 5-10, 235, senior

Hard-hitting linebacker — a first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League selection — helped stuff the run for a stingy Lancers defense. Also a bruising running back, he rushed for 114 yards in 27 carries with two TDs in a 31-30 double-overtime loss to Valley Christian in the CCS Open Division II title game.

Defensive back: Maurice Wilmer, 6-2, 200, senior

The former Colorado commit used his length to terrorize opponents on both sides of the ball, including a game-sealing interception in the end zone during a 7-3 victory over Valley Christian that ultimately decided the WCAL championship. First-team all-WCAL selection.

THIRD TEAM

Defensive back: Justin Sinclair,  5-10, 175, senior

Three-star recruit lined up opposite of Maurice Wilmer on a secondary that limited Serra quarterback Luke Bottari to 10 of 18 for 57 yards in 42-7 loss to end regular season, then 15 of 26 for 173 yards in 38-8 loss during CCS Open Division II semifinals.
